Instructions to enable 801.X authentication for Windows devices connected by wire on the network

These instructions apply if you need to connect a Windows device by wire to the EGO network. First of all remember that you do need to have a EGO account to proceed.

Step 1 - Enable the Service

  1. Go Run → services.msc
  2. Select "Wired Autoconfig" (in italian: "Configurazione automatica reti cablate"
  3. Right click → Properties
  4. Select Manual or Automatic start (preferred)
  5. Apply/Start the service. If a prompt appears in this phase, you have to ignore it.

Step 2 - Configure the NIC

  1. Go Control Panel (legacy version) → Network connection and sharing center → Click on "Change Adapter Settings"
  2. Locate your ethernet adapter → Right click and select "Properties"
  3. Select the "Authentication" Tab
  4. Flag "Enable IEEE 802.1X Authentication and ensure the network authentication method is "Microsoft Protected EAP (PEAP)"
  5. Flag "Remember my credentials for this connection each time i'm logged on"
  6. On the same tab, go to "Settings" and uncheck "Verify the server's identity by validating the certificate" → OK. No other flags on this last pop-up windows should be checked.
  7. On the same tab, go to "Advanced settings" and check "Specify authentication mode" → User Authentication
  8. You'll be prompted for your AD credentials; you should enter them in the format VIRGO\myusername (and related password)
  9. Close all the tabs. You should now be able to connect.

Note: in case of multiple NICs

If you have additional network cards on the same machine, you have to do the following:
  1. Go Control Panel (legacy version) → Network connection and sharing center → Click on "Change Adapter Settings"
  2. Locate your secondary ethernet adapter → Right click and select "Properties"
  3. Select "Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" → Properties → Advanced
  4. In the DNS Tab, uncheck "Register this connection's addresses in DNS"
